THE WIND-ENERGY CRISIS ON MIGRANT SPECIES
SCOPE
The wind-energy information poster spreads awareness on the affects of wind-energy development on migrant species. The poster provides data studied across the Midwest. The information reflects the number of deaths of migrant species, the geographic locations of wind-energy development, and the data studied on mortality rates between the years of 2015–2021.
METHOD
The look and feel of the poster mimics the motion of the wind produced by turbines. Small, light-blue circles in the top right corner are inspired by a thermal heat map that is constantly tracking bird migration year-round. The cool-toned color palette correlates to wind, rather than green energy. When designing, my goal was to veer away from green to push the idea that wind turbines are not providing enough energy to be considered sustainable. The bright orange is an accent color to highlight important data.
SCOPE
Passage is an organization that spreads awareness about the dangers of wind-energy development towards volant species. This organization protects the line of flight through heavy wind turbine areas. Created in After Effects, this process allows me to bring my designs to life with motion graphics.
METHOD
When designing the logo for Passage, I wanted to reflect the metal structure of the wind turbines through the shape of the bird. The metallic effect allows the bird to appear as an equal to wind turbines because both parties are metal. It was important to include movement in the logo. The tapering vertical lines in the tail of the bird allows a sense of direction as if the bird is taking odd into the sky. The vertical connection between the ‘E’ and the center line of the bird provides a sense of solidity in the lockup. The lockup is placed in a dark environment. There is a mechanical look and feel as the lockup has a metallic effect, strong like the steel.
METHOD
The metallic effect creates and illusion of strength for the birds against the wind turbines. Through the process of creating this logo, my skills to solidify the principles of design strengthened. The Passage lockup presents the following elements of design: shape, space, form, line, value, and texture. With these elements, I was able to create a solid and engaging lockup. I strengthened my skills in Adobe After Effects by using presets, effects, and other key features in the software.
